Ashley + Jake...Love Under the Sunset

What makes a great wedding? For us, it may be different than what most might say. But, the things that seem to be true in all weddings is this...
- Close family and friends.
- Intimate setting. Friends are laughing, having fun and goofing off.
- A gorgeous ceremony that fits the couple completely.
- Friends who want to celebrate just as much as you do.
and...a wonderful couple who loves each other.

Ashley + Jake had one of those weddings. They exchanged vows in the most intimate way. Among 20 of their closest friends and family they stood holding hands on the deck overlooking the ocean. The warm wind was blowing and the sun was pouring down in happy approval. For the rest of the evening Ashley + Jake danced in the living room, sat under the sunset talking with friends and just spending time with the people they loved most. The traditions of bouquet toss, cake cutting and first dances were made simple and allowed Ashley + Jake to be themselves. Natural, excited and just full of love.
In such a small group we stepped into their intimate day as a photographer and left feeling like family. We felt so blessed to witness such a unique and special wedding for two amazing people.
Ashley + Jake...if you are reading this...I LOVED YOUR WEDDING!!! Thank you for treating us so well!

They had their two dogs in the ceremony as ring bearers. They were so good and .... loveable!

The ceremony was so special. Ashley's mom was so excited to take her down the aisle and it showed all over her face.

We were so lucky to get some time with them on the beach. The conditions were amazing and the couple....gorgeous!

Crystal + Mike...Love at the Corner Church

I looked down at the timeline and felt like crying....in a good way. We had over 2 hours to spend with Crystal + Mike capturing whatever we wanted. Are you kidding me?! We were so excited for the day to start. We drove the winding back country roads to a very small little church that was surrounded by gorgeous fields. A small red barn dotted the horizon and the sun toasted us in the early morning cold. We pulled Crystal + Mike into the field to capture the first pictures of the day. Crystal was such an amazing bride and had no problem dancing around in the tall grass with her bare feet. Mike worried about blisters and sharp rocks and even carried her bright orange heels. It was adorable. We spent the our time together discussing their dreams for the future, how beautiful the landscape was and just how great the day was coming along. It was so relaxing and just fun!

Thank you Crystal + Mike for an incredible day. And thank two fold for allowing us so much time to capture you two just being...you two. It was great!

We were taking pictures when we turned around and saw that someone had written friends on the step. It was so adorable that we had to take advantage.

Before I could even finish my sentence, "Wouldn't it be great to take pictures with that...." Mike had rushed over the cop and asked her if we could take pictures with her horse. Are you kidding me....how awesome is he!

Peacocks in High Color

When the clock hits 2 it's time to start thinking about crawling into bed. It normally takes me about 20 minutes to finally pull the covers over my shoulders. On some nights I'll open up my lap top to start exploring all the delicious goods on Etsy. If you haven't heard of it, it's the very best place to find all things for weddings, decorating your home or just decorating yourself. It's amazing. I started to search for hairpieces. I just think they are one of the most simple things that a bride can do to make her look distinctly special on her wedding day. I love some of the creative designs that we have seen over the years. Here are a few that I found on Etsy last night. Sorry...I didn't get the exact company names of those who made them.

I welcome the beach like a long lost friend. As we get closer to leaving the coastal mountains behind us I roll down my window and soak in the chilly air. I love beach weddings!
I hadn't met Ashley + Jake prior to their wedding day. The day we were to meet with them, I had dropped a computer on my big toe and couldn't even think about walking. So I was thrilled to meet them and find out that they are some of the most lovely people walking the planet. They both welcomed us into their home as though we had been adopted and was now officially part of the wedding party. Eddie and I both left feeling as though we had experienced something so special and amazing.

My Man

Maybe it goes back to the whole man in a uniform thing. I've always thought it was so interesting to hear a man talk about his passion for his work. Whether it is something completely blue collar or it's a desk job...their is just something sexy about a man in their work attire. I always thought I would want a man who comes home in a button up shirt. Nice slacks and a brief case. For some reason that was always it for me. Then I met Eddie. He worked for FedEx and wore those adorable navy blue short, the pretty purple shirt and carried that little signature computer thing. It wasn't what I had been dreaming of, but it was SOOO sexy. Then we finally had the chance to go after our dreams of being photographers. Now I see him in all kinds of attire. Our PJs, nice dress slacks and a button up, or shorts and t-shirt. But, Eddie rocks my world in whatever it is.
Occasionally when we shoot together we find that a specific moment only calls for one photographer. So I step back and let Eddie work. It gives me the opportunity to step back and see him in the environment. To see him active in something he is so passionate about is amazing to me. I feel so blessed to have a man this wonderful in my life. And then to think that I get to work with him and see him just unleash his creativity is so amazing.

The Vista House was where Eddie and I sat staring into each others eyes while listening to Colbie Caillat. The rain poured down on our car and drummed us into an absolute dreamy bliss. It was our fourth date and the very moment when I knew that I loved him.
Now we stood in the same spot, cameras in our hands and the rain was falling in a slightly gentler way. This time we were completely focused on a different love story. Jessica and Allen had just gotten married and were stealing a couple of shots before they headed off to celebrate. There we were watching young newlyweds kissing at such a special place for us. All I can say is that I love this job! I love what weddings remind me of. Hearing the vows, seeing the couples in love...it's just so amazing to be a part of it all.

Danielle + Brian...Silly as all Get Out!

Her bright red hair shined in the sunshine and reminded me of a warm sunny day. They made funny faces at each other from behind the ivy as we captured their love story with our cameras. They didn't care that we were taking pictures. They were just having fun and wanted to enjoy every moment they had together. I knew that their wedding day would be special because I knew that their love was special.
Their big day wasn't much different than their engagement photoshoot. They danced and struck poses like they would if they were alone in their home. It was so amazing to see them together as two best friends who almost couldn't contain their silliness. Isn't that the way it should be? Best friends who starting their life together!
Congratulations to both of you Brian and Danielle! Let us know when you start your BBQ business...we want to be your very first customers!

I pull the blankets high over my shoulders because we keep the house pretty cold. I open my lap top and prepare myself for a long night of searching. I have my regular topics like 'hair pieces,' 'necklaces', or 'irish.' Everything in our home is decked out in green shamrocks and Ireland flags. My husband has quite a love for all things Irish which means that I do to. So when I found Etsy.com I knew I would be hooked. Etsy offers all homemade items that are gorgeous. Items you would never find on your own. If you are designing a totally unique wedding then you should check out Etsy. They offer great prices too!

Magyn + Jesse...Rolling in the Waves of Love!

I had swam in the ocean dozens of times. I even been in the arctic waters of the Oregon coast in the middle of November. But, this terrified me. I slipped off my $15 sparkle flip flops and rolled up my pant legs. I handed my camera bag over to Eddie as if I was about to go into war.
The sun was falling gently over the beach and lighting up the orchid pedals that surrounded the spot where Magyn + Jesse were going to get married. The small cluster of guests stood in waiting for this very intimate and special moment. Magyn and Jesse took each others hands and walked out into the ocean. There they exchanged vows, kissed and said their I dos. The water rushed in around my legs and covered the bottom of pant legs. Everyone giggled as they watched this special ceremony take place. It was so special and unique it was hard not to beam with excitement. Then Magyn and Jesse took it one step further and wanted to walk out to the bigger waves to throw the bottle that held their vows into the ocean. $10,000 worth the equipment in my hand. Sand quickly pulling from underneath my toes. Waves coming in ankle height, then waist height, then knee height. If I lots my footing I would lose my camera and be the specticle of their wedding. I fought to stay put and not loose my nerve. I fought to capture the wedding as though I was a peaceful bystander. Then I saw a huge wave coming. No one else saw it. No one else warned us. I ran for it.
As I ran I looked over my shoulder and saw Magyn and Jesse go down. The wave hit them at chest height. But, they held onto each other and fought for stability. They regathered and kissed to celebrate their craziness.
We came out alive too. Our equipment made it and we captured the wedding exactly how we wanted to.
Bottomline...this was one of the most unique and wonderful weddings I have ever been a part of.

To keep things extra simple they rented a gorgeous beach house to get ready in, have their reception and stay in for the weekend. What a brilliant idea for small weddings.

Their little boy was having a tough time that morning. He is SO cute!

These shots were taken within in seconds of each other. I love them. He was so devastated, but as soon as he saw me smile at him it all went away. Hilarious!

They had their reception dinner out on the deck where everyone could watch the sunset fall over the ocean. It was so gorgeous.

This little racoon family showed up and watch everyone celebrate late into the night. So cute.

Up In Smoke...

The years that followed my release from high school brought me through a very "eclectic" stage. I wouldn't call myself a hippy, but I definitely spent more time on the river than I did in my own home. I collected things from all over the world or at least from Cost Plus World Market and that made me "cultured." I bought a huge collection of incense at the time that quite honestly gave me a headache. So in an effort to get rid of my stash I brought them to my high school photography class to give them an opportunity to capture some smoke shots.
In the end the shots were amazing....I'm so proud! But the room did stink like cooked hot dogs. I guess the incense are THAT old.

Erika + Collin....A Sunlit Kiss

I remember all the little details of the wedding, but for some reason there was one moment that left a sensory trail that I can't forget. The moment she put on her bright red heels...check. I remember that. The moment she first saw Collin...check. I remember that too. But the moment we took our first steps out of the hot reception room and felt the ocean air on our faces I got chills. The wind whirled all around us and the sun lit up every aspect of the scenery. The sky was glowing orange. I took a huge breath, it filled my lungs and felt amazing.
Erika began to spin around in circles allowing her dress to flow up around her. She must have felt the same magic that I was feeling. Collin just stood back and watched his new bride dance around like a little girl in her favorite dress up gown. As her face turned flush from running in the wind she plopped down on the grass and lade down under the sun. Collin joined her and in one moment they were completely lost in each other. It didn't matter that a camera was clicking away or that the air was starting to feel a bit chilly. They were celebrating their new life together.
That IS the moment I remember. That IS the moment that is permanently marked in my mind.

Congratulations Erika and Collin...you guys are an extraordinary couple!

This has to be one of my favorite ceremonies ever. Collin + Erika have an amazing sense of humor and it was highlighted by the fact that her veil kept blowing straight up into the air. Collin couldn't hide his laughter which made the whole situation that much more hilarious. Luckily Erika is the coolest chic ever and was able to laugh along with him.

Running with the Flu

I couldn't be more proud of my handsome Eddie. About 4 days ago he came down with the flu. If you were to ask him he would say that he was perfectly fine. But....he was sick. He fought off a 1o3 temperature and a sick stomach to run in the Shamrock Run today. It was raining and cold, but he still wanted to do it. He is a man of his word. If Eddie makes a commitment he makes sure that he sticks to it at all costs. I think that is one of the sexiest things about him. So, with the bug in his stomach he tackled the 8k race and did amazing. I couldn't be more proud of him.

St. Patrick's Day in our house is HUGE. As you can tell...Eddie was showing off his Irish pride with his all green outfit. So cute!

What a Man!

I love my husband. I think it's easy to fall in love with a man like Eddie, but there are times when I realize just how lucky I am. It's moments like when he decides to spoil me for no reason. Or he makes me dinner for me when I have had a full day.
But, over the last few weeks I have gotten a glimpse of how our life will be when we are old and not walking so well. About 2 weeks ago I dropped a computer on my big toe. I am still walking funny. But, as it was healing he took care of me like I was a precious package. He got up at 6 in the morning to teach my photography class. He brought me my meals, took care of Lucy and made sure that I had everything that I needed. Gosh he is amazing! I don't write this to brag...but it's a thank you to my hubbie...just in case he is reading this exact post.

I was just having a bad day. It started with a headache and then it was sprinkled with some bad news, a little bit of frustration, a long to do list and just a stinky attitude. What was wrong with me. Gosh! It's a rare moment when I just feel crummy, but today was that rare day. I sat down on the floor and allowed myself to just let it all go.
At that very moment I felt a cold little nose bump my elbow and then push my arm up so that it could make room for her. Lucy always knows when I am bummed, in pain or just need some good ol' fashion cuddling. I always say that she is my shadow. She follows me everywhere and is always there for me when I need some cold nosed cuddling. I am sure all of you dog lovers understand!

Elizabeth + Matt...Exploding Hearts

His heart was pounding. The thought of what could happen to him and the men that he works with riddled his brain. The slightest move, a wrong decision and the EID could detonate and seriously hurt everyone in the area. What he was feeling at a such a critical moment was nothing like the feeling he had on his wedding day. Matt detonates explosives for the military and the thought of being the center of attention for his own wedding was killing him!
Matt + Elizabeth are a strong, confident and a composed couple. It's one of the first things that I recognized about them. I love it when people can be honest with me and direct about exactly what they want. They both shared with us about their hopes for their big day and exactly what would just drive them crazy. "Don't make us pose, or do anything super cheesy." I love that. They seem like they put everything out there for each other to love or take and it works. They are always on the same page and understand where the other is coming from.
So to hear that Matt was so overwhelmed by his nervousness just rocks my world. A man so composed couldn't possibly have nerves. But it happens to everyone. After 8 years of dating the day they were finally waiting for was among them. I'm sure he had so much excitement and emotions that were just building inside of him. That's the way it should be. A pinnacle of hopes, dreams and love that gets you a little....squirmy inside.

The parents found a quiet spot on the porch to reflect on the day and share a kiss. Weddings are always a special time for parents to think about their own marriages and everything that they have been through. I love those moments!

It never takes long before I want to move the sofa to the other side of the room and completely revamp the entire space. I get bored with the same look and need variety to feel....like I still the love the space I know so well. If it was up to me I would change every facet of my life in the same always revolving way. But, I fight that urge for sanity purposes.
So, when I created my blog I knew that I always wanted to change it. I just never found the time. Well, I finally took an afternoon, learned some html and revamped. I like it, but I know that in a few months the little flaws will be staring at me with blatant awareness. Oi!

Cheren + Tyler...A Glance Across the Room

His smile could be seen from the across the room. She periodically looked at him as he joked around with his friends. Everything about him was just intriguing. Later in the evening their paths crossed, smiles were exchanged and names were traded. They have been together ever since.
Their wedding was just as smooth and seamless as their first introductions. Through out the entire evening Cheren + Tyler continued to exchange glances from across the crowded ballroom.

We were so excited to be a part of your beautiful wedding! Thank you for sharing your day, your friends and your story with us!

Cheren + Tyler... To Be Continued

I stood in the living room and stared at the huge windows that overlooked the river. The house was so peaceful that it made me want to curl up on the couch and take a nap. I always love these quiet moments before the wedding day "officially" starts. Soon there will be a bride running around the house trying to beautify. Children will be calling for their moms and the make up artist will be chatting about the days events. To have this moment to reflect on what is about to happen is such a blessing. I think of my own wedding day and what I did in that quiet time before my day "officially" started. I take a deep breath and realize that my day is about to begin as a group of women come walking in the door.
Mac makeup covered the dining room table. The makeup artist started to work her magic on Cheren's grandmother. She was such a charming and gorgeous woman. I hung on her every word and tried to capture her enjoying the pampering. I looked out of the corner of my eye and saw Cheren sitting on the floor with the babies. Even as I walked into the room she didn't loose focus of the twins lying so quietly on the floor. As if she was in her own little world, Cheren beamed down on them. I could see all of her hopes and dreams unfolding as she looked at their faces. One day Cheren + Tyler will have their own children and she will be looking at them the exact same way.
It was one of those moments that really defined the day for me. It was such a precious moment that I don't always get to see.

Our Fresh New Take...

We pulled up our sleeves to find the slightest sign of relief from the heat. It felt like a sauna in the small room where we were photographing the basketball team. I can't imagine how they felt after a good practice. They were good about it though.
We wanted to try something a little different with our portraits. A more "Sports Illustrated" look. We have a ways to go with it, but we like the starting results. Here are a few of our images with the new style.

Our Booth...And One Great Winter Formal

Laughter erupted from behind the current. A flash went off and then another huge burst from a small group of girls who were making funny faces into the camera. Once their photo printed out it was instantly snatched up. The girls gasped for air as their laughter could be heard over the entire party. This happened over and over again with each group that entered the photobooth. There is just something so fun about a photobooth. Maybe it's the fact that you can hide behind the curtain and be a goof ball with no regrets. I don't know....but, it's great!

We had so much fun at the winter formal this year! Our photobooth was a hit and the kids had so much fun too! Thanks Faith Bible High School for inviting us!

Oregon Bride Best Of 2011

You poured over design plans with your cake decorator for hours. Sipping on your coffee, your head realed with all the possibilities. But, your cake decorator took care of you, offered great ideas and even gave you a discount...just because she was so excited about your design. She arrived on time, made some last minute changes and even brought some garnishments.

It's All About The Lighting

We get asked all the time..."what do you need us to do so you get really good pictures?" We don't NEED you to do anything, but there are a few things that you can do to make things easier for us. While shooting Jocelyn and Mike's wedding last weekend, I was thinking about this question. Maybe I should start sharing examples of our "dream" setting. You know, things we like along the way.
Well, it just so happened that one of our "tips" that we have on our wish list. (You can see our wish list HERE.) Is good lighting. That may mean window light that pours into the windows and gently casts a glow upon our bride and groom. BUT, that can also mean cool lighting. As soon as the blue, teal and purple lights were turned on Jocelyn came running over to me. "I like the lights, but if they start to mess up the pictures make sure you turn them off. I don't want to sacrifice good pics for lighting." First off, I love that she was so blunt with us!!! So good! Second, the lighting was great. Anytime, you can cast colored lights up against the walls makes for great reception pics. It makes things so fun and colorful.

Bryn + Mike...Like Two Ducks on a Pond

One way or another they were going to cross paths...it was just inevitable. As they threw their bags over their shoulders and grabbed their pillows they walked up the same stairs to get comfy in their new dorm rooms. After several trips their parents had become crossed paths and become friends. There they stood in the U of O parking lot, "this is Mike." "This is Bryn." It all started there. They ended up being neighbors, they started dating and became THEE biggest Duck fans in Oregon. Well, maybe that's arguable.
Six years later they stood on the edge of the cliff overlooking the ocean. The wind blew all around us and cooled us down to a chill. But, as Bryn took her first steps down the aisle...Mike's face spread with the most adoring smile. The chill, the wind was all forgotten. Everyone sat quietly has they shared their vows and exchanged rings. The rest of their day was just a celebration of two soul mates tying the knot.

The Hidden Beaches...Estephanie + Brett Get Married

We heard about the rain back home and it made us smile. We were driving down the winding roads that took us to the edge of the tropical forest and then looped around to suddenly face the ocean. My feet were dangling out the window as the warm hair toasted my little toes. It was a business trip that was wrapped up in a little package that looked just like a vacation. Even when while we were shooting Estephanie and Brett's wedding I couldn't help but think about how much fun I was having. We shot their wedding photos 5 days after their wedding...when things settled down. Puerto Ricans LOVE to celebrate. Any chance for them to spend time with family and the people they love...they will take it. So after the wedding celebrations settled down we set out for a hidden little beach that was one of their favorites.

"Does anyone know what photojournalism is?" I ask the question to see if any of my students are on the fast track to teaching this topic themselves....no one answers. 14 pairs of eyes stare blankly at me. Some are interested, some are pretending and some are down right tired. It's 8 o'clock in the morning and I don't blame them. I only have 1st period so that means I can go home and relax, but they have a full day ahead of them.
I have been teaching photography at Faith Bible High School for 4 months now and I love it. My students are incredible. All the teachers discuss how hard it is to grab their kids attention or get them to listen...my class??? Well, they are a whole different story. The room sits silently for my class to start. I beg them to talk by telling them that this is their fun class. You know, the one you can goof off in. Being tired has a lot to do with it, but it's also a mix of the fact that they are extremely studious. They ask me questions that force me to think about my personal journey with photography. I love the challenge.

So, since it's such a huge part of my life I thought I would share with you some of my students work. We haven't even gotten to the fun stuff yet...just the nuts and bolts and they are already doing so well! I am so proud!

Every once in a while I step back from my very busy life and reflect. As the new year starts I think about how I can improve for 2011. I guess it dawned on me that I have the exact life I want. I have a husband who is my everything and a career that gives me so much happiness. Sure we work super hard, but I am so blessed to be where I am at. So for 2011 I am not going to wish that things were different, but embrace my blessings and celebrate like I never have before. Life is good!

Jennifer + Adam...Let Love Do The Talking

Tears filled my eyes and began to fall upon my cheeks. The laughter was uncontrollable! He gasped into the microphone with tears in his eyes...waiting for the right words to come. He paused, laughed, cried, gave a few uhhs and still was searching for the right words. I stared through my camera as the events unfolded. The best man speech will FOREVER go down into my favorite moments. I would give anything to have a copy of the video. He had so much to say and too much emotion to let it out. Uh...I was in pain afterward!
Jennifer and Adam met in high school and have had their arms wrapped around each other ever since. While we walked around the park capturing the two of them they were always laughing. I'm sure it was over jokes that could have dated back to their senior year of high school. You can tell that they are best friends who are desperately in love with each other. It was such a pleasure to be a part of their big day and hope that we have many weddings like it...especially if the speech can be replicated.

Their puppy was so cute!

Jennifer + Adam chose to see each other before the wedding so they could make sure that they got lots of pictures and avoided the stressful rush of doing it later. It was such a blessing to have this time with them.

They can be such goofballs together...just the way it should be.

Jennifer's grandparents own a hop farm which turned out to be AMAZING for photos. If only everyone could have a hop farm in their backyard.

Perfect Memories...One Song at a Time

As a guest you walk into the gorgeous ballroom and see the breathtaking centerpieces and gorgeous teal lights shining on the walls. Everything is so beautiful and elegant, but behind the scenes their is a chaotic and competitive battle mounting. As a photographer it is our job to get the photos at all costs. The DJ and wedding planner have their own agendas that have the same urgency and strict time line. We are all pulling in opposite directions and sometimes it can get ugly.
The really good ones...the vendors who are really passionate about their work know how to work as a team. They realize that they were hired by two people who desperately want to have the most amazing, fairy tale evening. It's not about the photographer as an individual, but the entire evening. Therefore as a DJ, photographer or wedding planner you realize that in order to really help that fairy evening evolve you need to bend and work with those vendors that are at hand.

Ryan Hein of Perfect Memory DJ Service was one person who truly understood that. He knows that as a photographer our greatest need is to spend time with the bride and groom and allow the create freedom to capture the images we need. Ryan, made sure that we had that. Some how...as if he was in control of magic...he was able to give us our time, kept the party going while the bride and groom were gone and found a way to create an incredible flow throughout the evening. I wasn't used to the attention, "Hey guys, are you ready to do that garter our do you need more time getting decoration shots?" I looked at him and couldn't understand why he would want to bend his time line for us...no one else has done that. A DJ who actually cared about my work and didn't want to sabatage it by cutting us off short. And then he returned to check on us about the lighting and then about getting more time with the bride and groom. Are you serious? Were you sent from heaven?

As the three of us started to clean up our gear and pack we started to discuss weddings and it became very clear that Ryan is at a whole different level. He cares so deeply about his work...or better yet...his craft, that it pours into everyone else that he works with. He ensures that his clients get every song that they ask for and that the evening is built around them. He is an extraordinary person and a DJ that deserves credit.

Day Time Naps

I have been having one of those days. Actually I have been having one of those days all week long. I have been working so much that I can hardly remember anything these days. Last night I stood at the top of my stairs desperate to find my phone. It's always the first thing I grab before I walk out the door and the last thing I touch before I close my eyes. And now my little buddy was missing. I was so tired I couldn't retrace my steps. I had no idea what I did that morning and couldn't hardly concentrate on the task of rethinking it. I'm exhausted. But, I did find my phone...in my robe of all places.

So today and I am giving a huge shout out to naps. The warm bed, cold outside, light trying to seep in the blinds kind of nap. Their the best and I'm off!

Michelle + Paul....Wedding Upon The Sunset!

I love beach weddings. The feel of the warm sand wrapping around my feet is like a little treat for myself as I document the wedding. I hold back the smile that is secretly trying to get out...as if I can't be totally happy while working. I really should let that smile show. How can I explain it.......It's like doing the thing I love most (photography) while being at my favorite place (the beach.) It's the best.

I packed specific clothes for Michelle and Paul's weddings. Since it was a beach wedding I brought my sparkly sandles...so I could feel the sand slip between my toes. A very strategic choice. And I brought my bonfire clothes. Just in case the guests were willing to brave the mist.
Michelle and Paul's wedding was everything I could want in a beach wedding. I sat in the bridal suite shooting Michelle's gown as I looked out at the water, the beach and then toward Eddie shooting the groomsmen on the rocks. I realized that I was really happy. I really love what I do. I feel blessed everyday that this is my life. I have a husband who is amazing to me. And I can share my creative world with him. He embraces my hair brain ideas and runs with them....that's a first!!! And then I look at Michelle and Paul and see how in love they are. It's really great to be able to share in their day. A day where they vow to be by each others sides forever. They are a beautiful couple who know how to laugh together and cry together as life comes at them.

To Michelle and Paul, thank you for blessing us with an incredible day! I had so many moments where you guys reminded me of Eddie and I. Congratulations and thank you!

Long Time No See

Okay, so we have been gone for a long time. Eddie and I spent the last 3 weeks traveling all over St.Louis, Southern Illinois, Sacramento and Los Angeles. We have been hunkering down in hotels all over working on our images trying to get everything done by Christmas. It's crunch time....and I kind of love it. But, we do disappear for a while in the winter. A big sorry to our friends and family!!! We love you guys!

LeCookie Monkey..."Having More Fun With That Sweet Tooth"

I blame it on the sugar. Just the smallest taste and my head starts to pound. I can feel every vein throbbing and my chest starts to tighten. I love sweets though. It's a sad story really.

That's why I struggled so much as I listened to Cheren talk about her wedding cake. "Oh, Amy you have got to try my cake! Its to die for. Trust me, it isn't a typical cake." She must have told me 4 times how great her cake was. So, as the party cooled down and guests started to exit through the large double doors I walked over to the cake table. I stared at the slices of cakes and weighed the options of headaches to one amazing piece of cake. Cheren gave me a look of wide eyed approval and excitement and I knew what I had to do. I took a bite and immediately looked at Cheren. It was out of this world! Buttery, not too sugary, lots of flavor, light and super moist. Ah, it was amazing. I sacrificed heart ache...literally...to have a slice and it was completely worth it. I spent the next few minutes gooshing over the cake with Cheren. LeCookie Monkey has a special flavor called "humingbird." It's a basically a crazy twist on a carrot cake, add pineapple, coconut and bunch of other yummy goodies. It was the flavor that everyone talked about and ran out in the first 10 minutes.

Eddie and I come across a lot of vendors who are all great at what they do. But, when we come across a company that does things this good then we just have to get involved. Our Wednesday...Volleyball & Soccer

I was sitting on the track stretching out my hamstrings as I listened to the banter of the high school kids. I loved to hear what was important in their lives. I felt like I was being let into a secret world that every parent wished they could be a part of. As a track coach we weren't completely allowed in, but we definitely had a key.
The conversation started up about their favorite bands. Who's hot, who's not and who needs to just fall off the face of the earth. Then someone brought up Blues Traveler. My ears perked up since this was one band that I really knew. It was super hot in high school and maybe even into college, but I wasn't sure. I was shocked that they knew who they were and still liked them......so I listened in...."Do you like them?" Then I heard the worst thing ever....
"I don't listen to oldies." The conversation moved on from there. I heard nothing else after it. I lost the air in my lungs and I looked up at Eddie who was blocking the bright sunlight from striking my eyes and we just looked at each other. It was the very first time that I felt really old. Our music is now oldies to high schoolers. Are you kidding me!!!!

There is nothing that will make you feel older than being around high school students. So, lucky for us, our reality was checked as we photographed Faith Bible's Soccer & Volleyball team. Most of the kids were on our track team so it was really great to see them again. Their volleyball team will be going to state next week and they are expected to take it all. Go Falcons!

I have driven by the Queen Anne Mansion a million times. It's 10,000 twinkle lights light up the night sky from miles around as if it's a beacon calling everyone to it. On this day it was a sign of celebration. Even as the rain poured heavy outside the lights twinkled brightly.
We celebrated our Halloween Eve with Amber and Sean. A couple as unique and beautiful as they come. They dawned glass earings, Scottish kilts, custom tattoos and smiles that wrapped around their faces. We has such a blast just spending the day with Amber and Sean and can't wait to see their photos finished.

Natasha + Kyle...Goofiness, A little Cheese & Good Food

I think it's pretty safe to say that most men don't like their photos taken. Occasionally we come across a man who is the model of the perfect arm candy and will pose for any picture. Then there are the guys who completely come out of their shell when the camera is on them. But, in all my years of shooting weddings I have never come across someone quite like Kyle....

We pulled up to the french styled chateau and was in awe. DeLille Cellars is gorgeous and the perfect setting for Kyle and Natasha's wedding. She has this European vintage chic style that just needs a wedding that is classy and timeless. Ah, it was gorgeous.
As she tied her thick black bow on her strands of pearls I got ready to head out to take pictures. I immediately hit it off with Natasha, but it was now the big moment to meet Kyle. As we walked and gushed over the wedding, Natasha turned to me and looked dead in my eyes and said, "Kyle isn't very good with photos... No really." I had heard it a million times so I put her fears at ease and continued to gush. I met Kyle and he was kind, sweet, and just seemed to be perfect for her. As the shoot started I begun to realize that I had met my first "Kyle." It wasn't as though he wasn't very photogenic, but he just couldn't be serious. I would envision this gorgeous shot of him leaning into her and kissing her under the willow tree and I would get him doing a thumbs up with a huge grin. I would tell him to relax and be natural and he would do the typical GQ pose where he stares at his watch.
My first reaction is to look at the bride. If she isn't liking the situation I set in and start the work the scene. If she is laughing, then I'll check with her to see if she is ok with him being "Kyle" and I continue on. The point? When I looked at Natasha she was busting up laughing. She was absolutely dying and I thought to myself that she was his other half. I know a lot of women who wouldn't tolerate his goofiness, but he has found a gal who loves who he is, accepts it, and cherishes it. Turns out that the shoot was a lot of fun. I teased him, fought to get a few straight images and laughed with Natasha for the next hour. I think that 's what makes these stories so special. That everyone is different and it's is such a cause for celebration when a person finds their best friend that matches them perfectly.

As you can tell he was able to "cooperate" for a few of the images. As he got warmed up their was less cheese and just good romance.

Tom Douglas catering created the most amazing food. When I told my brother (a big time chef) about Tom Douglas he was so jealous. Apparently he is considered to be one of the top chefs in the world. So my pleasure!!!

Our Saturday....Lana + Mark (Illinois)

We sat at a long table inside Pagliai's Restaurant surrounded by people that we didn't know. As conversations warmed up, bellies got full, and introductions were made we began to get a glimps of who Mark and Lana were. Mark is a strong and passionate man. He is the son of amazing parents. A brother to look up to and a man who will go to the end of the world for his bride. Lana is a stunning gal who is shy and radiant at the same time. She is the everything to her father and a best friend to her mother. She is passionate about Mark and being an incredible wife.

Their wedding the next day was incredible and I thought many times throughout the evening that I am a very blessed person. Thank you Mark and Lana for bringing us out to Illinois. For allowing us to be a part of your day and for treating us as though we were part of the family!!! You're the best!

Our Saturday...Taylor + Josh (Dallas, Texas)

I had never been to Dallas before so a small part of me thought that weddings in these parts might be a little more country than I was used to. I wondered if they all wore giant belt buckles and large puffed up hair. Feel free to laugh at me at this point. It was pretty ridiculous right? I just didn't know what to expect.

Taylor + Josh's wedding turned out to be nothing like that and everything I had hoped it would be. There wedding was set in a an old 1920s, 3 story loft. The bricks were exposed, the windows opened by large pulleys and cranks and light poured in through huge factory like windows. It was the perfect setting for a wedding. It was beautiful and so unique. I just gooshed over the windows, the decorations and the entire vibe of the night. I walked away satisfied and completely warn out.

I can't wait to share the rest of the photos with you. So look for them in the future!

The conditions were not at all what I had hoped. We always wish for a slightly overcast day, but a sky just soaked with rain isn't good. It's not good for hair and makes a the surroundings seem so gloomy. But....we were so lucky to be photographing Kelly that day. She is one of those gals who are super laid back and just runs with the fun. The gloomy weather didn't bother her a bit. She wasn't afraid to sit on a wet bench or stand under a tree of heavy drops. She made things easy and super fun. I loved her roll with the punches personality and I know that is going to help her go far.
Congratulations on making it to your senior year. And thank you for being so incredibly easy going on such a messy day. It turned out to be really fun....even as it started to pour!

Every senior portrait photo shoot takes me back to high school. I try so hard to understand the person that we are photographing so we can catch them as them...not someone we are trying to make them. So as I think about the person we are capturing I think about who they are in high school. What about them is unique?
As we spent our afternoon with Ben I thought of someone I would have been friends with in school. Someone who is laid back, fun to be around and crazy about sports. He has this extreme closeness with his family that he will probably appreciate much later in life. He is a soccer player, a Seahawks fan, and has great manners. He's a total catch.

Ben, it was really great photographing you. We wish you best your senior year and hope that we will have a chance to photograph you more as bigger events come along. Congrats!!

On The Road Again...

I just can't wait to get on the road again.....
Seriously, I love traveling. If you asked my husband about it he would say the opposite. Only because I get completely stressed out the few short days before our plane leaves ground. I worry about how board our dog Lucy will be. I actually plan play dates for her. And then I panic about what I'll forget and all the things I have to take care of before we walk out the door. But, once we are in the air....I get so excited.

We are flying to Dallas first thing in the morning for Taylor & Joshua's wedding. Then we are flying to Illinois for Lana & Mark's wedding. We will be gone for two weeks total...and we'll try to keep you updated on our travels......but, don't hold it against us if we are M.I.A. for a while.

Our Friday...Mary + Fred

So we got the warning in an email and again verbally as we strolled through the park. Mary just had to give us a disclaimer about their "posing abilities." I reassured her that we will give her lots of ideas so she won't have to even think about it. After all we want it to be fun...not stressful.

Under a small tree we started snapping away and then all of a sudden Mary slid her hand to her hip, she popped to one side and gave me the "I got this look." In fact I must have said that 10 times that day. It happens when I ask for a sassy look and all of a sudden I get that and a bit more. She nailed it. Everything I asked for, she gave it.
Fred had his own flair that matched Mary's fun personality perfectly. He seemed to be having plenty of fun watching his gorgeous bride strut her stuff. He just kept looking at her with a huge, very satisfied looking smile on his face. The two of them turned out to be a huge surprise and was super fun to photograph. So once again...no disclaimer needed. Mary and Fred...you take great pictures.....and I hope it was fun and not to painful!

Our Thursday...Crystal + Mike

'Would you mind rolling in the grass?"
Okay, I didn't actually ask that, but it I did ask if they would at least lie down. Crystal and Mike had been up to this point willing to do anything. I held my breath as I wondered whether they thought I was insane or not....
Jenkins Estate has thee most beautifully manicured lawns and we wanted to take advantage. We had a vision, but we needed one couple (Crystal and Mike) to be willing to lie down. Would they do it. And with a big grin Crystal said sure as though she would have done it without asking. Fhew!!
Crystal and Mike are laid back and super fun people who love anything that has to do with sports and has a hint of competition. We had so much fun pouncing all around the gardens looking for good spots around the trees or on the open lawns. They were laughing and teasing each other while Eddie and I ceased the opportunities. We are so excited to be shooting their wedding next year...we will have so much fun with them!!!

Tonight I sat listening to a friend ponder what it will be like to fall in love. He's desperate to have that one person that he knows will forever be by his side. In every avenue of his life he has countless opportunities to meet women...but, he doesn't want just anyone. It made me think. It's pretty amazing to ponder how every person has a different story. Some meet online, some through a friend or some during a softball game like Eddie and I did. It happens anywhere.
For Jessie and Brandon they met at work. While spreading pizza dough and mixing toppings they built a friendship based on past stories and funny jokes. They hit it off immediately and soon enough they started making their own history. They found their perfect person in the most obvious place.
I love hearing the stories. What makes a couple completely different from the next.

Our Saturday...Magyn + Jesse

We sat with Magyn and Jesse at a local Starbuck's to get to know each other. We listened to their hopes and dreams for their perfect day and we liked what we heard. They planned to get married on the beach...just a few guests and the sunset. They would through a bottle into the ocean that contained their vows and a letter to a future couple who might find it. They had plans to walk out into the water for their vows and final kiss...and that's when alarms went off in my head. WAIT....it's October 2nd. If you are from Oregon you understand the concern. The chance of sunshine and warm water is about 1/2%.
So I was shocked as we neared Lincoln City and the skies were a deep blue. They did just as they planned. They kissed in the waves, threw flowers under the falling sun and was almost carried away as they threw their bottle deep into the ocean. The entire day was a completely new experience for us and we had a blast. Ahh, it was amazing!

Alison + Chris...Love Under the Moonlight

We had been to this farm once before for an August wedding that seemed to set records on the heat scale. I actually thought I wasn't going to make it through the day...it was that hot.
We had returned for Alison and Chris's wedding and we were super excited to get a new experience at the farm. I can't say that it was much cooler than last time, but the breeze kicked up and made it possible to survive.
As we drove up to the farm it made me rethink all the great memories of Jessica and Matt's wedding. We had so much fun and we knew that we were setting out for another great day. As soon as I met Alison I knew that she would make our day easy. Not only is she a completely knock out, but she is fun, laid back and makes the most amazing expressions.
The day cooled off, the sun dropped and the moon rose on an amazing evening at the farm. As the guests danced under the lights I looked around and realized that this was a great wedding. It was classy, simple and completely low key in a beautiful way. People were comfortable and able to laugh with each other freely. Boys played on the golf cart while the kids ran through the wheat fields. People talked out in the twilight and the DJ sang a song to the new couple. It was just so fun for everyone who attended.

So this little girl decided to play in the mud while her parents looked away. It was incredibly messy, but hilariously cute at the same time.

I love father daughter dances. It always says so much about their relationship. There are the cryers, the laughers, the quiet nervous dances, and the ones where the father is stoic while he fights back tears. Alison and her father were laughers. So cute!

Our Sunday Afternoon...Libby + Alec

Ahh, Pike's Place. It's one of the busiest streets in America. Actually, I made that up, but I can totally see it being true. We have had dozens of photo shoots down on these crowded streets and every time it's a little different.
On Sunday we showed up to our meeting place next to the famous golden pig and waited. We met 2 gals who were waiting for their photographer (who was 1 hour late) for senior portraits. And we introduced ourselves to two more couples who we thought might be Libby + Alec and weren't. Ooops!
No offense to those two couples...they seemed sweet enough....but I was so happy to meet and get to know Libby and Alec. They were so fun and easy to be around. I always love it when we find our perfect photographic match. We are looking forward to shooting their wedding!!

Our Sunday Morning...Ben

We love doing senior portraits so when the skies parted and the rain disappeared we were super excited to head up to Ben's House from downtown Seattle. As always I think about the shoot and who our "subjects" will be. Is he outgoing, a class clown or just completely quiet. Sometimes the anticipation kills me to the point of silence. I know...crazy right?
Ben turned out to be...well a great guy. He was quiet, but you could tell that he had a serious sense of humor. We headed out to the beach that overlooks the sound to capture most of the images. It was sooo gorgeous out!

Our Saturday...Janelle + Brian

The small bed and breakfast offered hundreds of places to disappear and get photos. As I walked through the gardens I found so many little spots to feature the rings and bouquets. It was perfect.
We were there to capture an elopement. Janelle and Brian were looking for something simple, stressless (if that's a word) and quiet. As we stood next to the pond and listened to their vows, birds chirped in the background. It was then that I realized that they got just what they wanted. The afternoon was amazing and so beautiful.

Our Saturday...with Kelly

Before my eyes even opened this morning I heard the rain falling outside. I sat there forever just feeling how amazing being in bed was. I could have stayed there forever. And then the thoughts of our photo shoot started to creep into my mind. It's raining, but I hate to cancel, so should I find a backup plan, or should I just go and see what happens, I need to bring an umbrella, and a towel, I should leave extra travel time for traffic, I wonder if the place will be open........

And so I was up. Throughout the 100's of photoshoots that we have done we have never had to shoot in the rain. Maybe sprinkles, but never a downpour. So as I drove to Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden I was feeling pretty confident. I figured that as long as Kelly was down for a bit of moisture...then we are game. As soon as I met her I knew she was going to be laid back enough to handle the elements. The rain held off just long enough for us to get what we came for and then the sky let go. Rain fell in buckets as we walked to our cars and said goodbye.
So for now....our record is still good!!!! Thanks Kelly for being so great today!!

Our Monday...Erika + Collin

I snapped a photo of Erika peering out the window at the numerous chairs that had toppled over from the wind. Everything was falling over and blowing away. Guests were running all over the lawn trying to catch various items before they blew away and into the ocean. For so many brides this would have been the point of panic. The wind ruins wedding hair, decorations and...well plans. But, as I released my shutter Erika turned around with a huge grin on her face and laughed it off. Though the situation wasn't what she had been dreaming of since she was little, it was still special to her. Which is the way it should be.
They embraced the tough things and had fun with it. Collin who is a total kid at heart anyway embraced it and helped turn every situation into pure comedy. While Erika's veils were blowing all around her during the ceremony, Collin has this adorable grin on his face as if to say, "Sweetheart, you look amazing, but you have to admit...this is pretty funny." And it was. I was dying while watching Collin's reaction. Priceless.
Erika and Collin are truly a perfect couple who love life and each other. Who can lose? Congrats you guys!!! We love you!

730 Days And Counting!!!

"Don't worry. Once you see him it will change everything. Just wait!"
It happened to me. Two years ago on September 14th I woke up in the strange bed of a rental home that was obtained just for our wedding day. From the moment my feet hit the floor everything became a surreal chain of events that seemed to go too fast for my comfort. Things weren't how I had planned, envisioned or even hoped for. It was a mess. But, there was one sure truth, and that was that I needed to see Eddie. As the entire world buzzed around me I was screaming inside desperate to nuzzle my face against his neck. I just wanted to wrap my arms all up inside him as he surrounded me, but he wasn't there. I later found out that he was struggling on the other side of town trying to get our music sorted out.
I dressed in a blur, fixed my hair from the poor job that the salon did and drove to our wedding in a complete fog. "Realize" by Colbie Callait came on the radio and I just lost it. Tears poured down my cheeks and I started to shout in the car. "I am about to marry Eddie and I am the luckiest person in the world!" I realized that I was about to marry the man that I had been dreaming of for so long. I was about to commit to him when I felt like that just wasn't enough for how I felt. I realized that I had been blessed beyond anything that I could ever understand....I had to turn off the radio.
I waited 30 minutes for him to arrive. And then an hour. It was killing me...I was sure of it. Finally my girlfriend Laurie popped her head in the door and said, "he's here."
As I walked the extremely long path along the lake I saw him. There he stood just a few feet from me looking like the strong and handsome man that I loved so much. The moment I tapped him on the shoulder and just looked in his eyes was a feeling that I will never forget for the rest of my life. One glance and I knew I was okay. All I needed was to look in his eyes to know that my world could slow down and start to rejoice in what was about to happen.

We sat there next to the lake all by ourselves. As I crawled onto his lap we just held each other and talked about the day. The rest of our wedding was a pretty big wreck in which I have yet to experience anything else like it. But, I look back on that one moment and it made everything seem so right.

Two years ago I married the man of my dreams. Eddie, if you are reading this, I want you to know that there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about making that same decision to marry you......and how I would always say yes, again and again. I thank God for you everyday! I love you honey!!!!

If you ever ask us if you should do a first look or not you will always get the same answer. Do a first look. That one moment made up for everything else that went wrong or crazy throughout the day. If I could give one bit of advice it would be to do a first look, make it special, and make sure you plan a little extra time so you can spend a few minutes completely alone. And that means to photographers after we get what we need.

Our Sunday... Elizabeth + Matt

The day finally arrived and we were so excited to get started on Elizabeth and Matt's wedding. The day was embellished with gorgeous floral arrangements, candle lanterns, green ribbon and everything else that was rich in color and beautiful to the senses.
Looking back on the day and what touched me most was the wedding cake. For the most part cakes don't rock my world, but this one was special. I didn't even count how many layers it had, but there had to be 6??? Then there were several smaller cakes that framed in the main tiers. BUT, what made this cake so perfect was that Elizabeth's 87 year old grandmother had baked it with every ounce of love she could muster. It's amazing to me that she was able to even think about making such an intense cake at her age, but to also want to do it to honor their marriage and show her love just blows my mind.
Elizabeth and Matt had an amazing day and the cake was the frosting on the.....I think you get the point!

Rochelle + Adam...

The exact moment was unclear. It all happened so long ago that the memories are a little faded and fuzzy in spots. Rochelle and Adam met in elementary school when freeze tag and wall ball were all the rage. He likes to kid that he had a crush on her since she was in pigtails and it's probably true. Later on in life they stayed close. His best friend was really good friends with Rochelle. His grandmother's house where he grew up was sold to her parents and so there connection continue to get stronger....and it sounds like their feelings for each other as well. They eventually jumped into the boat and started a relationship and have been together ever since.
Rochelle and Adam got married on a quiet ranch. The setting was breathtaking as the sunset fell upon the grounds and everyone started chatting and having fun. It was a beautiful day all around and I was thankful that we had an opportunity to be there.
Rochelle and Adam, you guys are an amazing couple who have an amazing family. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your day!!!

I LOVE it when the sun pours over a wedding as if it's blessing the day with a golden glow. Rochelle's family was dancing in the light and we just shot away.

This isn't a new idea, but it's one that I love! When planning your wedding day attire you should consider finding thee perfect shoe for you. Find something that tells a story.
When I grab the wedding shoe box and put it under my arm I begin to think about all the great places that I can shoot the all important shoes. When I slide the lid off and find a gorgeous pair of chartreuse heels or bright blue cons...I get so excited. I love shoes that tell a story of the person that wears them. Although, ivory colored stilettos are wonderful, it's the bright green ones that really get me pumped. Or maybe some bright red heels with hearts on the sole. Uh, it's so good!

So when you are finding those perfect shoes find ones that really fit you. Physically and soulfully.

Our Sunday...Cheren + Tyler

I scurried up to the very front to get a better angle of the families dabbing their tears. Cheren and Tyler had just began to say their vows as her family looked at each other as if to say, "I couldn't be happier right now." As I watched for those perfect moments that I wanted to capture I noticed Brittany, the maid of honor, peer around the the bride and groom to look at her husband standing as the best man. Cheren continued to share her promises, forevers and I love yous and Brittany continued to peer around them with a look of absolute love in her eyes. Then I noticed that the other two brides maids were looking across at their husbands who were also groomsmen. Throughout Cheren and Tyler's vows their bridal party was soaking up their words and desperately trying to share it with their spouses as if it was a special reminder of just how lucky they are.
I can't say that I don't do the same thing. Every time I hear a couple sharing their vows it gets me deep in my heart. It reminds me of the promises that I shared with Eddie and just how important those promises are. If you are reading this Eddie...I LOVE YOU so much!!!

Cole...The Next Generation

It wasn't too long ago that I was sitting inside a bridal suite with Tiffany as I captured her putting
One of the greatest blessings in our job is that we get the opportunity to be with our couples on the very best day of their lives. We see them at their happiest, looking their very best, and celebrating their lives together. It wasn't too long ago that I was sitting inside a bridal suite with Tiffany. We captured Tiffany and Franklin's wedding a little over a year ago and now we are sitting next to little Cole. Now we are able to celebrate the next generation of their marriage and the exciting new life they have together. It's almost as though we get to be there for all the good stuff.
And Cole is the good stuff. He is such an amazing little boy who desperately wants to show you everything he finds and give it a taste too. He smiled through the entire photo shoot and even danced for us as the sun fell over the beach. We had such an amazing time catching up with Tiffany and Franklin. It is so amazing to be apart of their lives through so many big moments.

Big sister was there too...to support Cole and teach him how to work the camera.

Sarah + Damien...Our Thursday

"He won't stop kissing her." I giggled and looked at the family as they all shook their heads in agreeance. Damien would kiss Sarah on the top of her head, on her cheek, and anywhere else that he could find. Everything about them was young love. Star crossed lovers type of love.
"Damien, go ahead and look right here." It was something we had to say over and over again during the family portraits. Everyone was all lined up and we were ready to snap our shots...when we notice that Damien is still staring at Sarah. Every picture was like that. We would make the smallest change and he would back looking at his bride. They almost needed a divider between them to get through the family shots. When it came time for the pictures of the two of them it worked out perfectly. "Go ahead and ignore us. Just be together, celebrate your marriage, and have fun." By the time I said celebrate they had already started kissing and our jobs got a lot easier.
It was a small backyard wedding that was designed in one month flat. The star crossed lovers just couldn't wait and so they had the most elegant, one month, backyard wedding imaginable.

Sarah and Damien....thank you! It was SO fun being around you two and watching the still new feelings of true love. You will never lose that...it will just change into a much deeper love that penetrates you to your soul. Enjoy it and savor ever minute.

Elizabeth + Matt.. Love and Sweat Peas

The rain pounded on the roof of our car as we listen to Colbie Caillat softly and quietly singing about love in the background. We had so much to say, but we were too overwhelmed by our feelings to share all of it. We uncomfortably sat in the front seats as we sat sideways so we could look into each others eyes. We held hands in hundreds of different ways and tried desperately to hang on to this memory. The sunset had long dropped behind the Vista House and we had no plans on going home.
That was three years ago about this same time. This time we were holding hands, camera in the other and looking over the Vista House just moments before the sun began to fall. We were there to photography Elizabeth + Matt's engagements. They had their fourth date here too, which must mean that they are totally cool like us.
Together we climbed walls, traversed hillsides of sweet peas and laid in the middle of the road. The sun set over us just as it did three years ago and it made me think about just how lucky I am.
It was great to see that Elizabeth + Matt were having the same feelings of amazing memories that I was. They love each other so completely and understand each other so well. Elizabeth is a no nonsense kind of gal. I love that about her. She is shoot straight and is honest with us and it's great to know exactly what she is wanting. They were completely laid back and down for anything that we asked. It was a blast to spend time with them and can't wait for their wedding day!

I LOVE these pictures. The sky was perfect and the sun was showing off!

God must have gotten out his paints because the landscape was the most beautiful display I have ever seen! It looked like the most vibrant and lovely masterpiece.

Danielle + Brian...Putting the "B" in BBQ

I remember a time when online dating was something that people didn't speak of. That has really changed as the dating world has shifted and more people are starting to use the sites instead of looking in local bars and clubs. So many of the couples we have worked with have met online. It's crazy to think that the one person who is meant for you could be in a profile on Match.com.
For Danielle and Brian they found each other online, chatted and fell instantly in love. They found their other half in a profile that seemed just too perfect to be true. As we walked through the gardens and talked about the wedding and life it was obvious how much they completed each other. Danielle, with her southern drawl, would talk about Brian "B" as though he was the most intelligent and capable man on the planet. They talked of their plans for the future as though they had been together for 40 years. "B" would just smile and watch her light up as they talked about their BBQ business. She supported his dreams and took them on as her own and it seems that Brian would do the same. I love to be around couples who truly respect, honor and cherish their spouses/ fiances.
Thank you Danielle and Brian. We had soo much fun with you guys. Every time I see the pictures of the two of you it takes me back to the conversations we had! Good stuff!

Sugar Crystals

What is it about sugar that makes me crave it every evening around 9 o'clock. I think it might have an addictive substance in it that makes you crave it daily. And it's working. Since I was little I have been interested in all things sweet. Before we started our photography business I used to make wedding cakes. My mom is also starting a cheesecake business that specializes in weddings and events. Oh and my sister in law is a master pastry chef. So I can easily say that sugar runs in my family. So...when I laid eyes on Jessie and Brandon's wedding cake I got excited. Sure...it didn't have a 4 layers, intricate piping, and all the fondant details, but it was gorgeous. She had looked for months for a baker who would do sugar crystals. They all could of course, but they insisted on using fondant...which is an acquired taste for most. So, when she finally called Whole Foods and found out that they could do a buttercream frosting with sugar crystals it was all set. The cake was gorgeous and tasted amazing! It looked as though the cake was made of diamonds! So...if you want to do something a little different try sugar crystals. Ask your local Whole Foods store or you can contact Linda at the Bellevue, WA location (she comes highly recommended!)

Krisha + Troy...A Day To Remember

From the moment that I slid my camera into my bag I knew what I was going to write about when it came time for Krisha and Troys wedding. The only problem is that I have yet to find words to explain what I want to say. It's a simple thing really, but for some reason I can't decide what it is that has stirred me inside. It hit me when I saw Krisha start to cry when she saw her nieces for the first time. It came when she pulled her family aside and gave them deeply personal gifts and they all cried with joy. It's how Krisha continued to peek over her shoulder through out the ceremony to make sure that she could share that moment with her parents and grandparents. It came even harder as Troy wiped every single tear from Krisha's eyes. Or when Krisha peered out of a window that over looked the ceremony that was underway and her father who was quietly looking on. She couldn't take her eyes off that moment. At times Troy would just stare at Krisha as if he was recording that moment forever in his memory.
The day of Krisha and Troy's wedding was a day where I felt like their vows had deeply effected every person in their family. It felt as though they had an appreciation for that day and each other stronger than I think I have ever felt. It's was as though you and your family love so hard that it's right there on their sleeve. As if a day won't go by without everyone knowing exactly how much they are loved. I still can't put my finger on the perfect explanation, but I felt it as strong as rain on my face.
I had a whole list of things I could have written about, but nothing seemed as real as how that day made me feel. Eddie and I left them on the beach as they celebrated feeling as though we had made an amazing friendship. Thank you Krisha and Troy for allowing us to be a part of your deeply personal day. There were times when you could've asked us to leave...and there were times when I was shocked you didn't...but those moments really touched me and I appreciate you letting us in. You have a beautiful family.

Three generations

This is Diesel. He was quite the catch and my favorite little buddy of the day.

Eddie snapped this shot as I was busy upstairs. They are huge Oregon Duck fans so I thought this was especially brilliant. It's is first shot as ring picks and frankly I super proud.

If I could give one bit of advice to every future bride....allow your photographer to do their job. Give them lots of time and some beautiful locations to work and let them capture everything they can. So often we only get a few minutes or are confined to tight places...it felt so good to just relax and spread our wings a bit.

I love this pictures. This one happened all on it's own. They were very tired at this point and wanted to just be together. So cute!

So funny that this is the next shot. These pics are somewhat out of order....lol.

Eddie snapped this of me... I liked it, but felt that I need to explain that I changed for the bonfire. We were somewhat off duty at this point ; )

Guest Book Trees

Here's an idea that you might not find in a bridal magazine or on the bridal websites. It's a guest book that is a little different, completely personal, and just the perfect art piece. Derek McClenahan designed this guest book tree for his very good friends as a wedding gift. Guests left a thumb print and wrote a personal message around the mat. It was so amazing and such a great idea.

So I challenge you to rethink the typical guest book. Do you know someone who is an artist? Use your creativity and make something that will be a piece of art.

Jocelyn + Mike...They Just Know

We had a very busy Saturday. We shot an engagement session earlier in the morning that was all the way across Seattle and then we drove to the Queen Anne area to do an engagement session with Jocelyn and Mike. We had never met them since they live in eastern Oregon so I was super excited to get to finally spend time with them. As soon as I jumped into the conversation I simply just fell in love with their warm and laid back personalities. Right off the bat they warned us...as many couples do....that they are not photogenic. I told them that I would guide them through the process and help them get comfortable with us. The funny thing is that it was all a sham. Maybe they didn't know...but they are so photogenic it wasn't even funny. Jocelyn would give me her best angle, adoring eyes, and then move into a bunch of different poses as if she was a seasoned veteran. Mike knew exactly how to be himself in front of a camera. If he ever read this he would die laughing because he was terrified and not so sure about this photo shoot thing. It still amazes me how some people struggle in front of a camera and some people just know what to do. They just have that it factor. ...ME. I don't have that special something that makes me stick out in pictures and so I choose to be on the other side of the camera. Jocelyn and Mike have that IT factor.
I am so excited to shoot their wedding and can't wait to be a part of their celebration!!!

Nikki + Christian...Love Under the Arizona Sun

I first met Nikki at a wedding that we were shooting last year. She was the stunner who stole the dance floor, danced all night long and gave us amazing photos with every snap. Christian was there to, but in a totally different way. Christian had pulled us aside to discuss photography. He was adorable and super sweet and completely knowledgeable about all things techy. By the end of the night I realized that Christian and Nikki were dating and completely in love. They reminded me of Eddie and I. I am the outgoing one who loves to dance and just really let loose at weddings, while Eddie is that super sweet guy who is sitting off to the side making small conversations. I love that about him and it works really well for us.

All the memories of that evening came rushing back to me as I snapped my first picture. Nikki was so gorgeous and she knew exactly how to look deep into the camera. She is the perfect compliment for him since she almost saves him from having to be the center of attention. Christian would just stand by her side and just look at her as though he couldn't love her anymore. It was the perfect combination. They are getting married in Arizona next March!!

Seriously! She knows exactly what she is doing!

Lil' Jaycee...Tutus and Nikes

Baby photo shoots are unlike any other kind of photography out there. You can't plan out a time line or think of different poses that will work in a specific location. Sure you can plan different ideas...but that's all they are...ideas.
For Jaycee it was easy. She is an absolutely gorgeous baby who was a little on the sleepy side. As we danced around her capturing every yawn, smile and wrinkled nose I kind of laughed to myself. I realized at that moment that this beautiful little bundle of preciousness completely controled the photo shoot. If Jaycee wanted to crawl then that was the new idea for the moment. If she wanted to chew on her tutu, then that's what we were capturing. I guess we could have posed her, but that's not really our style. I like capturing Jaycee just as she is. And as she yanked a big fist full of daddy's hair I realized that it was working. It was cute.

Jaycee was so fun to capture and I am so thankful that her parents gave us the opportunity to capture these moments.

I had no idea that Eddie captured this moment. It totally tickled my heart when I saw it.

Like I said...she was swimming and so that became the pose of the moment.

I've said it before. A wedding photographer could easily drop their cameras and become a wedding planner. Not to say that what a wedding planner does isn't outrageously important. It's just that we spend time with every vendor and know stinks and who totally rocks. We visit every location under the planet and know which ones yield to great pictures and romantic settings. We see every idea imaginable and know exactly what you can do to make your party die. We spend every moment with the bridal party so we hear who stinks at their jobs, who forgot to turn on the A/C and who forgot to bring the correct flowers. We here it all and record it all. Eddie and I were discussing that we should start adding tips and great ideas to our blog as we come across them. We both giggled at the idea knowing that we always have high hopes for our blogs and then they never come to fruition.
So, here is a cute idea...if it's your kind of thing. Alison + Chris provided koozies for everyone of their guests. I like that they provided something personal and something that will last a long time. I always thought that wedding gifts should be something that people will continue to look at for years to come as a thank you for being a part of their lives. So, I challenge you to find something for your wedding that is completely you, completely personal and something that can actually be used or treasured for a long time.
